My top pick for a romantic getaway!

Aix Island Trip for Two

Today, we’re heading to Aix Island with my girlfriend, the only island in Charente-Maritime accessible only by boat. More than just a trip, it immediately feels like an adventure!

10:00 AM, Pointe de la Fumée in Fouras-les-Bains. Under a bright sun, we calmly await the arrival of the ferry that provides the sea link to Aix Island. The boat remains the only way to access the island. Already, at that moment, we understand that this is no ordinary day; it has the scent of adventure!

After a magnificent 20-minute crossing, discovering the forts that protect the Charente estuary and the old Rochefort arsenal: Fort Enet, Fort Boyard…, we set foot on land: Welcome, Aix Island is ours for the day: its preserved nature, its rich history!

Aix Island Bike Tour

After a pleasant detour to the Mother-of-Pearl Museum, it’s now time to cycle. In the saddle, we begin our tour of Aix Island. And that’s when the magic happens! Before renting a bike to tour the island, we enjoy the village, so typical, so authentic.

Four perfectly straight streets, with such cute little houses lined with hollyhocks, it’s the ideal place to enjoy a good coffee, already imagining that the great Napoleon Bonaparte had the same idea back then.

Moreover, we can’t resist a visit to the Napoleon Museum. It was here, after all, that the Emperor spent his last free night on French soil before surrendering to the British. A selfie in the famous bedroom, and voilà, we immortalize our own moment in History!

Several restaurants make our mouths water with local seafood. Yum, we can’t resist, it’s time to enjoy the island’s delights.

“If Aix is only 3 km long, every turn offers us a new landscape”

Island Beach Exploration

If Aix is only 3 kilometers long, every turn offers us a new landscape: wooded beaches, oyster farms, vineyards, forests and undergrowth, steep coves, large sandy beaches, meadows… a concentration of Charente-Maritime in just a few pedal strokes. We immediately understand that this island is a real gem!

After a short detour to Fort Liédot, here we arrive at our favorite: almost secret beaches, hidden in magnificent coves, the most famous of which is “Baby Plage”. Are we in Brittany? Are we in the West Indies? The landscape, facing Châtelaillon-Plage and La Rochelle, is simply unique. A feeling of well-being immediately washes over us, a wide smile appears on our faces.

Fort Boyard Panorama

To finish our 7-kilometer journey, we stop at the beach of Anse de la Croix, next to the island’s lighthouses and the Fort de la Rade designed by Vauban. The beach offers an incredible view of the famous Fort Boyard. We then imagine which international celebrities are currently filming the cult show. Lying on our towels, it’s also a “geographical quiz” break: “To the left, that’s Oléron Island, right? And to the right before arriving, that was indeed Ré Island we could see?” The panorama is breathtaking, the sunset must be just fantastic…

It’s already time to head back to the campsite; the ferry doesn’t wait for latecomers. On the way back, enjoying the last sea spray, we are already nostalgic. It’s certain, we will come back to experience other adventures on Aix Island.
