Visit Île d’Aix, a small, charming island, classified as a remarkable natural site.
Île d’Aix will captivate you with its coastal landscapes, secret coves, and unique character.
Smaller but not without charm, Île d’Aix is like a large garden dotted with hollyhocks. It’s an island where nature reigns supreme.
You can only access it by boat, departing from Fouras-les-Bains, Rochefort, or Boyardville on Île d’Oléron. Pack a picnic or enjoy the restaurants and brasseries in the town center, where you can easily savor quality seafood.
Île d’Aix, a Natural Island
Explore Île d’Aix on foot or by bike by taking the cycling paths all around the island. Several bike rental shops await you on the island. As you wander, you’ll catch sight of Île de Ré and Île d’Oléron, and perhaps even Fort Boyard. Only three kilometers long, Aix will surprise you with the diversity of its landscapes: forests, beaches, coves, groves… Île d’Aix is also part of the Flow Vélo, a new cycling route along the Charente.
Île d’Aix, an Island Steeped in History
“Before his exile, Napoleon Bonaparte spent his last night on French soil on Île d’Aix.”
Beyond its abundant nature, Île d’Aix is also a place steeped in history. A true fortress, the island once protected Rochefort’s maritime and military arsenal. With its fortified village and its forts, Fort de la Rade and Fort Liédot, it also sheltered Napoleon Bonaparte during his last hours of freedom before his exile to Saint Helena. The island has dedicated a museum to him, where you can visit his bedroom, which remains intact.
