Saint-Martin-de-Ré, fortified in the 17th century by Vauban, is the main town of Île de Ré. The village faces the Pertuis Breton strait, opposite Vendée. With its shops, cafes, and restaurants located around the port, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a lively place at any time of day.

The Port of Saint-Martin
The Port of Saint-Martin is the nerve center of the town. The activity revolves around recreational boating and fishing, which coexist within the port. It forms an island surrounded by two basins: a wet dock regulated by a lock and a drying-out basin subject to the tides.
Many cafes and restaurants line the quays of Saint-Martin. The activity of the sailors blends with that of the vacationers who observe the scenes of life from the cafe terraces.
Don’t miss out on some window shopping during a visit to Saint-Martin. The pedestrian streets between the port and the church are lined with chic ready-to-wear boutiques and other concept stores, giving the village a Parisian feel.
The Old Quarter
In the upper part of Saint-Martin, it’s pleasant to stroll through the old streets with beautiful bourgeois residences from the late 17th century. Don’t miss the oldest house in the village: the Maison de la Vinatrie with its half-timbered walls.
Around the church and Place de la République, a stroll through the old quarter is very relaxing when you want to get away from the crowd, which is concentrated around the port.
To admire the full extent of the village, climb to the top of Saint-Martin Church’s bell tower. At the top, a 360° panorama offers a magnificent view of the port, the sea, the village rooftops, the citadel’s ramparts, and the entire Ré countryside!
