The Hermione, Frigate of Liberty in Rochefort
At the heart of Rochefort Arsenal, a stone’s throw from the Corderie Royale, the Hermione, a legendary 18th-century three-masted ship, is the largest replica of a traditional vessel ever rebuilt in France.
The Hermione is currently in Bayonne for restoration work.
Visit the Ship’s Interior
Visit the ship’s interior, its various decks, its equipment, and discover the crew’s daily life. The reconstruction of the Hermione (a ship originally built between 1778 and 1779) is an authentic tribute to La Fayette, bringing to life a great adventure of human solidarity. It stands as a testament to the history between France and the United States of America.
Since 1997, the Hermione-La Fayette Association has undertaken the construction of an exact replica of the frigate Hermione. This French warship, over 65 meters long, was equipped with 34 cannons. It enabled La Fayette to join the American insurgents who were fighting for their independence in 1780.
The reconstruction was completed in 2014 with the goal of crossing the Atlantic Ocean and reaching America once again!
Visit the Arsenal Des Mers Adventure Park
In spring 2015, the exceptional adventure of the Hermione sailing to America began. The ship set off in La Fayette’s footsteps with a crew of 70 men. Since then, it has continued to sail to other ports in Europe and beyond, but always returns to Rochefort, its home port, between voyages.
Near the Corderie Royale, the Hermione’s maintenance workshops remain open to the public: forge, pulley workshop, rope factory…

The Accro-Mâts
In the dry dock located right next to the Hermione’s, you can climb the masts of a replica of an old sailing ship. In the spirit of a tree-climbing adventure park, the Accro-Mâts is a unique adventure park in Europe that offers a secure platform with a zip line.
Children (from 6 years old) accompanied by their parents will enjoy playing the topman by climbing the ropes and masts, 30 meters high! A cafe at the foot of the ship allows visitors to enjoy the view.
