Take a Cruise on the Charente Estuary and get Close to Fort Boyard!
On holiday in Oléron Island for only a few days, the children haven’t yet connected with Fort Boyard, so today, we’re heading to Saumonards beach in Boyardville to surprise them!
Fort Boyard from Saumonards Beach
Access to the beach is easy, with parking areas set up in the shade of the pine trees. We could also have come by bike thanks to the cycle path. We then take a path through the Saumonards forest, designed to protect the dunes, for a few minutes, and there we are on the beach.
The campsite receptionist hadn’t lied to us, Saumonards beach is magnificent! Dunes, forest, and sand as far as the eye can see… I spot the lifeguard station, perfect for a family outing! While their father tries to carry the parasol, cooler, boards, buoys, and toy bag, the children run to the water… and stop dead in their tracks upon seeing Fort Boyard, a majestic stone vessel surrounded by water. Seeing it on TV is one thing, but seeing it in real life is quite impressive: 68 meters long, 32 meters wide, and 20 meters high! Besides the famous TV game show, it was the setting for the film Les Aventuriers with Lino Ventura and Alain Delon. This Fort has hosted many stars!
A Magnificent Panoramic View of Fort Boyard
While the children play in the sand building a mini Fort Boyard, we settle down on this beach, which indeed offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Fort and of Aix Island.
The sea is beautiful and calm, and while their father swims in the distance, the children encourage him to swim to the fort. An ideal moment for some reading and relaxation in the sun. Although the beach is supervised, I make sure the children don’t go too far, especially since there’s a naturist beach towards La Gautrelle!
Between splashes in the water, the children, convinced they can see Père Fouras from the beach, call out to me, proud of themselves. The Fort is 2 kilometers from the coast, so unless they have exceptionally good eyesight… It’s snack time, so it’s time to go get an ice cream at Boyardville marina. Chocolate, salted caramel, or even violet and lemon meringue – a delight!
We will come back for a boat trip, like adventurers assaulting the Fort!
A cruise ship returns to port. Seeing the smiles on the travelers’ faces, it’s decided, we will come back for a boat trip, like adventurers assaulting the Fort! In the meantime, we’re going to see the Saumonards fort, which dates from the 17th century and has more recently served as a holiday camp.
We will come back during our week at the campsite, certainly for a picnic on the beach, facing the sunset, to admire the beautiful colors of luminous Oléron…
