Saintes

Saintes, a City Designated as a ‘City of Art and History’

The city of Saintes was one of the most influential during Gallo-Roman times. An important religious center, it is a prominent Christian city, a stop on the Camino de Santiago. Today, the city carefully preserves the remnants of its past, as well as its remarkable buildings. During your strolls through the city, you can visit: the Arch of Germanicus, the best-preserved amphitheater on the Atlantic coast, the Abbaye-aux-Dames, or the Basilica of Saint-Eutrope.

The archaeological museum exhibits elements of ancient civil and religious monuments, as well as numerous objects found during excavations, including a parade chariot dating from the first century.

Saintes, a City Crossed by the Charente

Embark on a river cruise aboard the gabarre of Saintes and discover the lush banks of the Charente. Today, the capital of Saintonge is a city with a Southern atmosphere. Let yourself be charmed by its small gardens, secret passages, and streets with sculpted decorations.

For entertainment, you’ll find typical festivals that recall the city’s rich past, such as the “Festival de Saintes,” which takes place every July at the Abbaye-aux-Dames.
