A land of oyster farming, the Seudre is a mosaic of colors, tastes, and scents

Humans have shaped fantastic landscapes along the Seudre. Arvert, the magnificent village of Mornac-sur-Seudre, and Saujon are popular holiday destinations, located in the heart of the oyster farming basin.

The Oyster Farming Villages of the Seudre

A vast marshy lagoon facing Oléron Island, the Seudre estuary attracts many tourists every year.

Discover the calm and charm of the surrounding towns and villages. The salt marshes once established have given way to claires, where oysters are now cultivated. You will discover splendid landscapes shaped by oyster farmers and salt workers.

To cross from one bank to the other, you will have the choice between the bridge or a much more peaceful ferry boat.

On the right bank, discover Marennes, the oyster capital. Visit villages home to salt marshes, including Saint-Just-Luzac, Saint-Sornin, Port-Paradis, or “La Cayenne,” the emblematic oyster farming site with the Cité de l’Huître.

On the left bank, discover the village of La Tremblade, which has always thrived on its maritime activities. Hop aboard the little train “La Coquille Filante” and discover oyster farming activities, passing through La Grève, the huts, and the markets.

Active Holidays around the Seudre

On the agenda, go hiking and take the time to visit, whether on foot or by bike, the heart of this region rich in oyster parks.

Right bank: 47 km route. Departure from Marennes marina, and arrival at Le Gua.
Left bank: 30 km route. Departure from Chenal de l’Atelier in La Tremblade, and arrival at the port of Mornac-sur-Seudre.
Every year in August, “La remontée de la Seudre” (The Seudre Ascent) is organized in Étaules, L’Éguille-sur-Seudre, and La Tremblade.

Hiking, cycling, horseback riding, or nautical excursions will be offered all summer long. You can stroll around visiting magnificent sites such as: the Cité de l’Huître (City of Oysters), the Oyster Museum, the Moulin des Loges (the only tidal mill still in operation). You can complete your visits with natural sites, which will give you a feeling of real freedom.

Le Train Des Mouettes

Hop aboard the steam tourist train to discover the landscapes of the Seudre estuary, in the heart of the oyster marshes. Le Train des Mouettes takes you on a ride from the stations of Saujon or La Tremblade.

The line serves the villages of Mornac-sur-Seudre (One of France’s most beautiful villages) and Chaillevette (Temple and small port) where you can make a stopover. The journey is 1 hour and 15 minutes long, covering 21 km of railway.

Did you know that Le Train des Mouettes is pulled by the oldest steam locomotive still in operation in France? Treat yourself to this unique ride to discover the landscapes of fresh and saltwater marshes, invisible from the road!
