Discover Madame Island, a Mysterious Island
Madame Island is located on the left bank of the Charente estuary, between the Fouras peninsula and Île d’Aix to the north, and the small oyster farming port of Port-des-Barques. It faces Île d’Oléron and the famous Fort Boyard.
Very unique, Madame Island is only accessible at low tide via the “Passe aux Boeufs”, a submersible road accessible on foot, by bike, or by car from Port-des-Barques.
Madame Island has only one road that allows you to go all the way around. As you stroll, you’ll come across small coves with beautiful panoramic views of the Charente estuary and Fouras-les-Bains.
Remember to check the tide times so you don’t get stuck on Madame!

Madame Island, a Paradise for Fishermen
Conversely, you have to wait for high tide to use the wooden pontoons built on stilts for carrelet fishing. Further south, a small sandy beach offers a unique viewpoint of this alignment of carrelets and the ocean.
Madame Island Aquaculture Farm
The aquaculture farm is the only site on Madame Island; don’t hesitate to stop by. You’ll discover salt cultivation in its salt marshes and samphire… you’ll also taste delicious seafood there.
