Located north of Oléron Island, the Chassiron Lighthouse is one of its must-see attractions! A stroll to the Pointe de Chassiron offers a magnificent landscape between cliffs and fish locks.

Climbing the Chassiron Lighthouse

Climbing to the top of the Chassiron Lighthouse requires a little effort, but you’ll be rewarded with the magnificent view awaiting you up there! You’ll need to climb 240 steps to reach the suspended gallery 43 meters above the ground.

From the lighthouse balcony, the 360° view overlooks Pointe de Chassiron and Saint-Denis d’Oléron. To the north, you can see Île de Ré and La Rochelle; you can even make out the famous Fort Boyard in the distance. If the tide is low, you’ll have the chance to see the fish locks: these small dry-stone walls built to trap fish between two tides.

At the foot of the lighthouse, a small shop allows you to bring back a holiday souvenir: a book, postcard, marine object, or a Paris Mint medal.

The Lighthouse Museum

Inside the lighthouse, there’s a modern and educational museum space dedicated to daily life on Oléron. The story of a young shipwreck survivor stranded on Pointe du Chassiron is brought to life with sound effects and light displays. The “show-path” museum allows visitors to discover Oléron’s past life in 30 minutes. Centered around the theme “people of the coast between land and sea,” the exhibition highlights traditional fishing (shore fishing, boat fishing, fish locks…) and Oléron agriculture (market gardening, viticulture).

The six rooms of the lighthouse rotunda have been transformed into a scenography blending explanatory models, ancient objects, films, and authentic sound testimonies. Designed for all audiences, the show-path is an excellent introduction to the history of Oléron Island, complementing a visit to the Oléron Island Museum located in the municipality of Saint-Pierre.
