The Charente and its tributaries, such as the Boutonne or the Seugne, peacefully flow through Charente-Maritime. They offer a haven of tranquility, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the coast.

Boating on the Charente

The Charente is a navigable river for 170 kilometers, between Angoulême and Rochefort. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean, after Rochefort, specifically at Port-des-Barques, facing Île Madame. You can rent a boat without a license from the nautical bases in the main ports. This rental will allow you to enjoy your vacation with complete freedom. It’s also possible to take part in a river cruise, for example, departing from Saintes.

Visit the villages along the Charente
Along the Charente, magnificent villages are worth a visit. Saint-Savinien, Port-d’Envaux, and Crazannes, for example, recall the river’s rich past, when it transported cognac and wines from the Charente region by gabarre to the coastal ports.

Saint-Jean-d’Angély, at the foot of the Boutonne, is an ideal stopover for those who wish to enjoy the gentle way of life in the Charente region.

Many castles are also worth visiting in the region. The Château de la Roche-Courbon, with its French-style gardens, is certainly the most renowned in Charente-Maritime and offers a majestic setting on the edge of a forest. The Château de Panloy, located along the Charente, offers unusual guided tours, such as its haunted evenings, as does the Château de Crazannes, known as the castle of Puss in Boots.

Enjoy a campsite rental to discover this region that has so much to offer. Explore the ancient provinces of Angoumois and Saintonge. Charente-Maritime welcomes you for family vacations, with friends, or as a couple.

The quarries of the famous Crazannes stone can be visited in an extraordinary natural setting.
